What is a sack truck?

A sack truck is a piece of equipment used for transporting heavy & awkward loads from one location to another. Sack trucks – often referred to as sack trolleys, sack barrows, hand carts or bag barrows – have an ‘L-shaped’ design, with a strong metal frame, foot plate at the base, handles and wheels. The foot plate - also known as a foot iron, toe plate or nose plate - is designed to slide under the load. The sack truck can then be leant back, lifting the load and taking the weight and strain from the user. Sack trucks are highly manoeuvrable and make the job much easier, quicker and safer for the user.

What are sack trucks used for?

Sack trucks can be used for transporting all kinds of heavy loads – including boxes, crates, furniture, white goods and machinery. They are often used in warehouses, workshops, factories and on deliveries.

Why is it called a sack truck?

Sack trucks were originally used in the 18th century, to transport sacks of spices around dock yards. These days, sack trucks are used much more widely, to transport a huge variety of loads.

Sack Truck Safety Hazards

Weight Capacity – Ensure that you choose a sack truck with the weight capacity to complete the job. Never try to overload the barrow or move a load that is too large for the trolley.

Wheel Type - Pneumatic wheels are designed for use on rough or uneven surfaces, while solid wheels are great for smooth indoor surfaces. When pneumatic wheels are used, check the tyre pressures match the pressure indicated on the tyre wall and that the pressures are equal in both wheels.

Load Distribution - Place the load evenly on the foot plate. Heavier items should be placed towards the bottom with lighter items on top.

Load Security - Use straps or bungee cord to secure the load to the trolley, to prevent the load from shifting during transport.

Handling Techniques - Use correct handling techniques. Push the trolley rather than pulling it, for greater control & reduced strain on your back and shoulders. Maintain a straight back when loading or unloading items, and grip the handles firmly with both hands. Use appropriate PPE such as toe capped boots, high-vis vest and rigger gloves. Take regular breaks to prevent fatigue and reduce the risk of injury.

Surroundings - Clear any obstacles or tripping hazards on your path before starting to move the load. Take extra care when moving the truck on any mild inclines or uneven surfaces.
