What is a platform truck?

A platform truck is a type of material handling trolley, used for transporting heavy & awkward loads from one location to another. Platform trolleys feature a strong metal frame, a large platform, a handle and four wheels. Often referred to as flatbed trolleys, platform trucks are highly manoeuvrable and make the job of moving heavy goods much easier, quicker and safer for the user.

Platform Truck Safety Notes

Weight Capacity - Ensure that you choose a platform trolley with the weight capacity to complete the job. Never try to overload the trolley or move a load that won’t sit properly on the platform.

Wheel Type - Pneumatic wheels (or rough terrain wheels) are designed for use on rough or uneven surfaces. They are ideal for use outdoors, in yards, on pavements or on building sites. While solid wheels are great for smooth indoor surfaces. When pneumatic wheels are used, check the tyre pressures match the pressure indicated on the tyre wall and that the pressures are equal in both wheels.

Load Distribution - Place the load evenly on the platform. If items are stacked, heavier items should be placed towards the bottom, with lighter items on top.

Load Security - Use straps or bungee cord to secure the load to the trolley if required – especially if the load is longer / wider than he platform itself. This will help to prevent the load from shifting or falling during transport.

Handling Techniques - Use correct handling techniques. Push the trolley rather than pulling it, for greater control & reduced strain on your back and shoulders. Maintain a straight back when loading or unloading items, and grip the handle bar firmly with both hands. Use appropriate PPE such as toe capped boots, high-vis vest and rigger gloves. Take regular breaks to prevent fatigue and reduce the risk of injury.

Surroundings - Clear any obstacles or tripping hazards on your path before starting to move the trolley. Take extra care when transporting loads on any mild inclines or uneven surfaces.
