Types of Step Ladders Available
Swingback Stepladders
Swingback step ladders, often referred to as ‘swingback steps’ are the classic A-frame stepladder favoured by many trades for their fast setup and portability. These ladders can be erected in no time, with their ‘swingback’ legs opened out to allow quick & easy access. These ladders are available in a choice of height options. Some models are available with an optional tool tray or handrails.
Please note that the number of treads quoted in a swingback step listing includes the very top of the ladder. As per HSE guidelines, the top three steps of these ladders should not be stood on.
Platform Stepladders
Platform step ladders, or ‘platform steps’, feature a platform as the top rung. When standing on the platform, the user is able to work more comfortably from a height. These types of stepladders are ideal for users working on longer jobs, where having both hands free to work and a platform to stand on are more convenient and comfortable. We have platform steps available in a wide range of sizes and materials – including both aluminium & fibreglass options.
Aluminium Step Ladders
As well as different types of steps, we also offer stepladders in different materials. Aluminium stepladders are the most common type. We have DIY, trade and industrial aluminium steps available in a wide choice of sizes. Aluminium offers strength and rigidity, along with being more lightweight than some other metals, so they can be transported from job to job easily.
Fibreglass Step Ladders
Fibreglass stepladders are more specialist pieces of kit, primarily designed for trade professionals, such as electricians and those working in electrically sensitive areas. As fibreglass is non-conductive, these ladders are safe for use when working with electrical supplies. Fibreglass is also a very strong and robust material, so the quality of these ladders is assured.
Fixed Steps
Our fixed industrial steps are straightforward non-adjustable aluminium steps. They feature a platform with steps on one or both sides. Many models are available with optional handrails for safey. These steps are ideal for use in commercial spaces, archiving facilities and workshops, when regular low level access is required.

Are step ladders allowed on site?
Yes, step ladders are allowed on site. Stepladders are not banned under health & safety law and can be used for a wide range of jobs on site. As per the Health & Safety Executive website, “The law calls for a sensible, proportionate approach to managing risk, and ladders can be a sensible and practical option for low-risk, short-duration tasks, although they should not automatically be your first choice.”
How to use a stepladder safely?
When using a stepladder, you must ensure:
- The stepladder is level and all four feet are in contact with the ground.
- Any locking devices are engaged.
- Only carry light materials and tools.
- Don’t overreach.
- Don’t stand and work on the top three steps (including a step forming the very top of the stepladder) unless there is a suitable handhold.
- Maintain three points of contact at the working position.
- Try to position the stepladder to face the work activity.
