Types of Extension Ladders Available

Double Extension Ladders

Double section extension ladders feature two sections, with a number of rungs on each section. One ladder section is designed to slide up the other and lock into place, to provide the length required for the job. Double section extension ladders offer greater height than a single section ladder, while being able to collapse to a more compact size for easier storage and transport. These are amongst the most popular type of ladders around, as they can be used for a wide range of jobs at a height and provide a great balance between access, cost-effectiveness, and compact storage. We offer double section ladders in a range of sizes, ranging from fully extended heights from 3m to 9m.

Triple Extension Ladders

Triple section extension ladders feature three sections, with two of the sections being able to slide upwards and locked into place to provide the ladder height required. These three section extending ladders typically offer greater reach, and they compact down to smaller sizes than double section ladders. However they do tend to be heavier, due to the increased number of sections. Our range of triple extension ladders offers extended heights up to 10m!

What size of ladder do I need for a two story house?

The average height of a two-story UK house typically ranges from 4.7m (15.5ft) to 5.8m (19ft). It is important to remember that an extension ladder can't be used in a vertical position, as it must lean against a supporting wall. This can reduce the usable height of the ladder by up to 1 metre. Additionally, for safety reasons, you must not stand on the top three rungs of a ladder. Taking all these factors into account, it is recommended to use an extension ladder that is at least 2 metres longer than the height that you actually need to reach.

Can I lean a ladder on my gutters?

It is not safe to lean your ladder on a gutter, as gutters do not provide a secure platform on which a ladder can rest. This would pose a risk to your safety, as well as damage the guttering. If you need to work around or near your gutters, it is recommended to use a device called a ‘ladder stay’’, or ‘ladder stand off’. This device attaches to the ladder and rests against the wall, allowing the top of the ladder to ‘stand off’ from the wall. It also provides greater stability for the ladder.

What is the 4 to 1 rule for ladders?

The rule for safely positioning an extension ladder is known as the 4 to 1 rule (or the 4:1 rule).

This rule states that for every 4 feet of ladder height, the base should be placed 1 foot away from the supporting wall. This provides the most stable and secure angle for the ladder to rest.

This rule means that if you are using a 20ft (6m) extension ladder, the base of the ladder should be placed 5ft (1.5m) away from the supporting wall.

Can I use extension ladder sections separately?

No, you must not break apart an extension ladder and use the sections separately.

In the past, under old safety specifications, extension ladders could be split apart and the sections used individually as single section ladders.

However, with the new EN131 Professional standards, this is no longer the case.

How Do I Make My Extension Ladder Safer?

It is important to use ladders correctly, never use a faulty ladder and never use a ladder that is unsuited to the job. Always inspect a ladder prior to its use, never over-reach and maintain three points of contact with the ladder at all times.
